"Perhaps the genius of ultrarunning is its supreme lack of utility. It makes no sense in a world of space ships and supercomputers to run vast distances on foot. There is no money in it and no fame, frequently not even the approval of peers. But as poets, apostles and philosophers have insisted from the dawn of time, there is more to life than logic and common sense."

Barkley Training Grounds

I think I've found my Barkley training grounds.  Lands End in Duke Forest off of Whitfield Rd in Chapel Hill. Not more than 100 feet of elevation change at a time, but it's steep and overgrown. 2mph is pretty good progress. Wash, Rinse, Repeat...

yeah, I think you will need to get a tractor tire and a rope and pull the tire behind you....

Really funny that you mention that... I've got a heavy chain and harness that I was going to try out. At the end of the day, it's like training to be run over by a bus though.

I do think a lot of the guys (& gals) who have the physical strength and endurance to finish Barkley have just gotten really frustrated there and given up. They're used to "soaring with the eagles" and Barkley clips their wings. Ironically, the back of the packers are probably much more prepared mentally to roll with the punches.

That looks about right! good luck with training!! I agree with Joe... several people I know who have finished more loops in the barkley than some of the bigger names in ultra running are just steady consistent, and VERY comfortable on super technical terrain..

WOO! so exciting just talking about it! such a cool event!
